Moapa Valley Empowerment

High School

Letter from the Dean’s Office

Welcome back to MVHS!  As always Moapa Valley High School is a great place to be each day.  Please note the school rules and regulations listed as well as and in the Student-Parent Handbook.  As a school community, it is so important that we are all aware of what is expected academically and in student behavior.

Just a few reminders as we begin the school year,  first, as we are half the size of comprehensive high schools in Las Vegas, and yet give the same amount of passing time, students have ample time between classes to go to their lockers and be to class on time.  Tardy passes will no longer be given in the library.  When a student is tardy for class, the teacher will mark it on the computer.  Students are allowed three tardies a quarter before a phone call goes home.  At the fourth tardy, parents must meet with their child and the dean; from five tardies on students are placed on a one day suspension for each tardy.  Tardies do begin over each quarter.  There will no longer be ‘Tissues for Tardies’ at the end of each quarter.  Also, to assist students in understanding the importance of getting to class on time, we will begin implementing TARDY LOCKOUTS in this fall.  When a tardy lockout is announced, teachers will lock their doors when the bell rings.  Any students tardy to class will be sent to the office and a phone RPC will be held immediately with the parent.  Also, remember that being tardy in the morning is only excusable for illness or a doctor’s visit.  Oversleeping or car trouble is not considered excused reasons for being tardy.  Sending a note will not excuse the student from a tardy.  Please review this tardy policy with your child(ren).  It is essential that they understand the importance of being on time, and what the consequences will be if they are late.

With regard to attendance, students who are absent from school for an excused reason (illness, family emergency, doctor’s visit) have three days in which to bring in a note.  After the third day the absence becomes truancy.  Truancy letters will be sent home every week.  After a student has three truancies, he/she will be cited for Habitual Truancy by the Metropolitan Police Department.  Our goal is to encourage students to be responsible in turning in their notes, and to be in school because we all know that attendance is essential in being successful in school.

With lunch being at the end of the day, we will continue to have our fifteen minute nutrition break after B3/G4.  Please make sure your child(ren) either bring something to eat or have money to purchase food on campus.  In addition to the cafeteria being open, our student store and many clubs will also sell snacks during that time.  It is a long day if they do not eat until 1:05 p.m.

Also please be aware that the time for the Monday Morning Assembly has changed.  In order to utilize time more effectively, Monday Morning Assemblies will be held between B1/G2 and B3/G4.  They will no longer be held at the start of the school day.

At MVHS we will continue to focus on being consistent with the expectations already established that help make Moapa Valley High School a place where students are challenged to grow academically and are provided opportunities to excel in all areas. Thank you for your support, and we look forward to working with you and your child(ren) in the coming school year.  If I can ever be of assistance to you please do not hesitate to contact me at 397-2611 ext. 4500.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cardinal

Dean of Students
